Rowing at RGU: Your questions answered

Did you know that RGU has a joint rowing programme with University of Aberdeen which caters for everyone’s level of experience? Ed Dean, our Head Rowing Coach, answers all our questions about rowing and RGU’s Learn to Row programme.

I’ve never rowed before, is it for me?

At RGU, we have a Beginners’ Squad for people who have never rowed before but are looking to try a new team sport. And we have a Learn to Row programme for people wanting to give something new a go and get active on the water.

I don’t regularly exercise, will I find rowing difficult?

You do not need to be a powerlifter to try rowing. It is the same as riding a bike, if you want to go fast, you can try hard. If you just want to enjoy a paddle around with your friends, then it can be easy!

Do I need to be able to swim?

There is no requirement for you being able to swim. Ideally, you can swim 50m in light clothing. If you cannot, you can go on the water if you wear a lifejacket.

I’m not confident in water, can I still join?

Of course! We spend most of our training time doing water sessions. We are on the river, not in it. However, there is a small risk of capsizing, so if you’re not a confident swimmer we have lifejackets to keep you safe while on the water.

Is it easy to travel to the training sessions?

Our land sessions are held at Butchart Recreation Centre which is on the 1 & 2 bus routes from RGU. Our water sessions are at the RGU Boathouse, AB11 9AA. This is accessible from RGU by getting the 1 or 2 and then either walking or hopping on the 15 bus.

If I take part, do I need to compete?

No! If you join the Learn to Row programme, it is all about enjoyment of the sport, making friends, and having a good time on the water. If you want to compete, we can also cater for you in the Beginners’ Squad. It will always be up to you and what you prefer.

If I do want to compete, will I need to travel a lot?

You won’t have to travel that much if you join the Beginners’ Squad. The beginners go to six races over the year. These are in Inverness, Glasgow, and Aberdeen.

Is it expensive to join the team?

We actually have one of the cheapest Learn to Row courses in the UK. Our membership for the year is only £80. This gives you coached sessions in our fleet at the boathouse for the whole academic year!
