My experience studying Law and Management at RGU

RGU alumna Sweta shares with us her experience studying Law and Management at RGU and how it has helped start her career in an oil and gas Talent Acquisition team.

A bit about me

Hello reader, this is Sweta! What you are about to read is how determination has shaped me into the person that I am today.

Let me introduce myself. As I was saying earlier, I’m Sweta and I have moved from Venice, Italy, to Scotland for my undergraduate degree at RGU. Aberdeen was not my first big move from Italy, as I had the opportunity to do an exchange year in the USA during my fourth year of high school.

I graduated from RGU in July with a first-class honours from Law and Management. Since October, I have been working at Petrofac as a Graduate within the Talent Acquisition team. In simpler terms, I work in the in-house recruitment of Petrofac.

What inspired me to study Law at RGU

When I was in high school, I studied Law, specifically Italian and European Law, which for some may sound quite hard, but for myself I found a subject that was challenging and very informative to understand my day-to-day life.

However, Law was not the only subject that I wanted to pursue. Economics and English as a foreign language, after my year abroad, became very appealing. Thankfully, RGU combined all of them in the Law and Management degree: the perfect mix between law and business classes.

The highlight of my degree

The highlight of my degree was my semester abroad in Utrecht, in the Netherlands. I did my semester abroad in 2021, with all the uncertainties connected to Covid-19 and the Erasmus programme, but I was still able to take part in this experience.

I strongly encourage anybody who can and wishes to, to take upon an opportunity like this one, it is an occasion to step out of your comfort zone, to meet and connect with people from all over the world, making unforgettable memories and long-lasting friendships.

My placement with Aberdein Considine

Within the curriculum of a Law and Management course, you can pick placement as a module in your third year. I was able to secure a three-month placement with Aberdein Considine in their re-mortgage department.

After the 3 months, I was offered a part-time job within the same department for my last year of university. I still remember vividly the challenge of juggling work, lectures, coursework, and the dissertation, but it was all worth it.

Aberdein Considine was one of my first office work. It allowed me to understand the work dynamics within such a big firm like this, and how the work of a single person ties in the overall department’s success.

How RGU supported my career

I absolutely enjoyed my time at RGU, and the mix between Law and Business classes have been very beneficial for my career.

Within the choices for my business subjects, I focused mostly on HR and HSE. These classes have been very helpful as background knowledge for the Oil and Gas environment that I am currently working in.

At the same time, the study abroad and placement experience with RGU really helped broaden my mind, build resilience, and enhance my adaptability skills to any environment I was in, as well as step out of my comfort zone and always make the most out of any experience!
