The benefits of studying the online Paralegal Practice course at RGU

RGU student Gioia shares with us her experience studying our recently launched Paralegal Practice online course which support professional paralegals in their career progression.

I qualified as a paralegal in (ahem)….1991 and I never felt that I could have undertaken a course specifically aimed at further developing my knowledge, as after this length of time I felt that I knew what to do inside out.

When the opportunity arose, I was really interested in the content offered within this course as I felt that this would take me out of my comfort zone and push me to embark on further education and develop more skills.

My experience of the course

I would thoroughly recommend this course to anyone in the same position regardless of age and length of service as you are never too old to learn. It was quite a challenge to go back to the classroom, in particular the use of ‘Moodle’ was daunting at first but eventually it became second nature and makes remote study work much easier to undertake.

The tutorials are carried out fortnightly using Teams and this virtual classroom is a fantastic way of interacting with my RGU tutor and peers on the course. We can chat and discuss the topics set for assessment. These tutorials set out the required coursework to be completed on a fortnightly basis and there is a degree of self-management to fit in around work commitments.

The benefits for your career

The course so far has created a further and much deeper understanding of not only the role of a paralegal but has opened up a fabulous level of insight into the legal framework and the attention to detail required to provide clients with an exceptional level of service. I think these are essential skills for an accredited paralegal. This has been great for my on-going development, the benefit of clients and therefore the level of professional service the business unit offers. I feel I have gained more confidence when dealing directly with clients and other members of the legal profession.

If any firm was thinking of having a paralegal undertake this CERTHE course accredited by the Law Society of Scotland, I can say that my experience so far has been thoroughly worthwhile and enjoyable whilst academically challenging, the result ultimately being of benefit to the business. Successfully completing this course would be of great benefit in having the accreditation achieved.
