Master of Architecture student and President of the 5710 society Heather McCole shares her involvement in clubs and societies at RGU as well as how and why to get involved!
Engaging with clubs and societies to get involved at RGU is a big part of university life. There’s a vast amount on offer from sports clubs like boxing, football, hockey, and volleyball to societies focusing on culture, faith, welfare, and specific academic disciplines. For example, you may be interested to join the midwifery society, law society, journalism society, or the 5710 architecture society, just to name a few.
Joining the hockey club
I started university in 2019 and, alongside my course, I prioritised being involved in a sports club that would allow me to stay fit and find friends. I joined the women’s hockey club and I continued to be part of the team all the way through my undergraduate degree.
From my perspective, I think it’s important to have an outlet – something away from the stresses and challenges of coursework and exams. University life can be hard and it’s healthy to make time in your week to do something you enjoy. For me, joining hockey made a new city seem small, I never walked on to campus without knowing someone.
Finding the 5710 architecture society
In addition to sports, I was pleasantly surprised to discover a society dedicated to my academic pathway. I signed up at the Freshers’ Fayre not really knowing much but I was excited to meet senior students and those who would be in my class in a more sociable setting.
Societies are not exclusive to those within related courses. Anyone with an interest is welcome to participate, even members of the local community often come along to hear about relevant topics. It is, however, an advantageous networking opportunity for those looking to enter the specific professional discipline.
A little bit about 5710
If you’re interested in the 5710 society, we run every Thursday after studio at 5pm where we welcome a guest speaker from Scotland, the UK, and sometimes worldwide where they provide an industry insight into the field of architecture and the built environment.
This is followed by some drinks and snacks in our new society zone on the first floor of the Architecture department in the Scott Sutherland School Building. This year, we are lucky to be partnered with Brew Toon beers and Revolution de Cuba, so our refreshment table is an exciting one!
The fun continues in town with a dinner at a variety of local restaurants and sometimes the night will finish in a bar. There is something for everyone on Thursdays. Whether you are a foodie, a craft beer buff, a SIMS fanatic, or you want to be the next Zaha Hadid, everyone is more than welcome! Alike many other clubs and societies, we are always excited for our social nights from our draw night to white t-shirt event.
Your turn to get involved at RGU!
You can always stay updated with RGU clubs and societies via social media, most are active on Instagram, TikTok, Facebook. As you embark on this exciting academic journey, consider getting involved in clubs and societies. It’s a powerful way to enrich your experience, build lasting friendships, and develop skills that will benefit you long after you graduate.
